Hypnotherapy for Driving Anxiety
The fear of driving and the worry of having a panic attack while driving is very common can be classed as a phobia. It’s probably one of the most common phobias I have dealt with in my hypnotherapy practice. Driving anxiety may produce feelings of loss of control and panic at the thought or behind the wheel.
Some people although passing their driving test never really feel confident behind the wheel especially when driving by themselves or in rush hour traffic. Some people though have gone most of their lives driving normally and with no difficulty, and then suddenly anxiety and panic overtake them. They then begin to cycle of predicting negative outcomes for future driving trips. This mindset once born begins to impact every area of their lives, home social and work.
What Causes Driving phobias and Anxiety?
There’s a couple of reasons why this can happen.
- The person had a panic attack and it just so happened they were in a car.
- An incident occurred while driving that frightened the person enough to lock in the fear.
Driving anxiety is a ‘conditioned response’. It is due to either experiencing a panic attack whilst driving or an incident whilst driving. If it happened on a bridge a fear of bridges could be incorporated.
The person with the driving phobia generally adds more places to their off limit list as time goes by if the condition is not treated. In my experience this phobia rarely subsides by itself. It does need some form of psychological intervention. Counseling or C.B.T do not seem good enough treatments to bring about the desired changes the client wants.
At the start it may be manageable, but often the driving anxiety increases with time. Sometimes it gets to the point where the person is restricted to driving only on familiar roads, or those close to home. Some people become so anxious that they can no longer drive.
How to Overcome Driving Phobia
